Why Pandaria Leveling Is Different
Coming off the sub-10-hour Cata bracket, Pandaria feels like a gear change. Three things reshape how you route:
1. You're grounded until 90
Pandaria flying (Wisdom of the Four Winds, ~2,500g) requires level 90. After five levels of flying everywhere, you're back to ground pathing — which means flight-path discipline, hearthstone choreography, and knowing which cliffs you can safely fall down all matter again.
2. Zones are level-gated in sequence
Jade Forest feeds Valley at 86, Kun-Lai opens at 87, Townlong at 88, Dread Wastes at 89. You can't zone-hop for better XP the way you could in Northrend. Speed comes from knowing which 30-40% of each zone to skip, not which zone to pick.
3. The main story spine is the XP
Each zone has a golden-path story chain that pays dramatically better than its side hubs. Blizzard tuned MoP's spine quests generously; the optional hubs exist for lore and rep. Ride the spine, ignore the branches.
💡 Leveling a Monk? You have a cheat code
The Peak of Serenity daily grants Enlightenment — +50% XP for two hours, stackable with rested. A Windwalker Monk running Enlightenment on cooldown is the fastest 85-90 character in the game.
Preparation at 85
Take the intro from the capital board
The Pandaria intro (Hero's Call / Warchief's Command) leads to the airship assault on Jade Forest — a cinematic chain that's also strong XP. Don't skip it looking for a "faster" entrance; it is the entrance.
Gear and heirlooms
- Heirlooms scale to 85 only — they stop working in this bracket. Swap them for your Cata quest blues or dungeon gear before the first Pandaria quest.
- Twilight Highlands / Cata dungeon gear is plenty; Jade Forest greens replace it within a level.
- Stock food, potions, and a full bag cleanout — vendor trips hurt more without flying.
Bank maximum rested XP
This is the single biggest lever in the bracket. Pandaria mob-kill XP is huge, and rested doubles it. If this is an alt, park it in an inn while your main raids Siege of Orgrimmar — a fully rested start cuts up to 2.5 hours from the climb.
Recommended Zone Order
Pandaria's zones are level-gated, so the order is mostly fixed — the speed comes from knowing which hubs to skip and when to leave. No flying until 90, so route tightness matters.
85-86: The Jade Forest
- Follow the main story chain — it's the zone's XP spine
- Skip the side hubs south of Dawn's Blossom
- Leave immediately when 86 pops
86-87: Valley of the Four Winds + Krasarang
- Valley main chain first (farmer Yoon intro can wait)
- Dip into Krasarang Wilds only if 87 isn't reached
- Stormstout Brewery insert lines up here
87-88: Kun-Lai Summit
- Binan Village chains are dense and fast
- Skip the Shado-Pan monastery side content
- Grummle caravan chain = big turn-in XP
88-89: Townlong Steppes
- Fastest zone in Pandaria per hour
- Follow the Shado-Pan war front chains
- Queue Shado-Pan Monastery while questing here
89-90: Dread Wastes
- Klaxxi chains carry you the whole level
- Klaxxi rep matters later — don't skip the paragons
- Ding 90, hearth, train flying, fly to Timeless Isle
Levels 85-86: The Jade Forest
Target: 3h. The airship intro dumps you into a war-front chain (Alliance at Paw'don, Horde at Honeydew) that flows straight into the zone spine: the search for the missing prince/generals, Dawn's Blossom, and the jinyu/hozen alliance arcs.
What to do
- Ride the main story chain without deviation — it's clearly signposted and pays the zone's best XP.
- Run Temple of the Jade Serpent once when the story routes you past it (quests are inside and along the spine).
- Grab flight paths as you pass them — Pandaria's FP network is your only fast travel until 90.
What to skip
Everything south of Dawn's Blossom that isn't on the spine: the fishing villages, the side hubs along the coast, and any quest that sends you backward. Jade Forest holds nearly two levels of content; you need one.
⚠️ Heirlooms are dead weight now
If you're still wearing heirloom shoulders/chest from the Cata bracket, they stopped scaling at 85 — you're fighting level-86+ mobs in level-80 stats. Replace them with quest rewards immediately.
Levels 86-87: Valley of the Four Winds (+ Krasarang if needed)
Target: 2h 45m. The Valley spine follows Chen Stormstout toward the Stormstout Brewery — almost perfectly linear, farm-country quest density, and it ends at a dungeon whose quests you'll want anyway.
What to do
- Chen's chain west across the valley → Stoneplow defense arc → Stormstout Brewery one-and-done with the inside quests.
- The mantid incursion quests at Stoneplow are dense kill quests — do all of them.
- If 87 hasn't popped when the Valley spine ends, dip into northern Krasarang Wilds (Zhu's Watch chain) for the remainder.
What to skip
Farmer Yoon and the Tillers farm intro — it's the gateway to MoP's farming minigame, great at 90, terrible XP while leveling. Also skip deep Krasarang; the southern coast is a rep zone, not a leveling zone.
Levels 87-88: Kun-Lai Summit
Target: 2h 45m. Kun-Lai opens with the Binan Village refugee crisis — a dense, fast hub — then climbs toward the peaks via the grummle caravan chain, one of the best turn-in sequences in the expansion.
What to do
- Binan Village full clear — everything there is quick and clustered.
- Grummle caravan escort chain up the mountain road — continuous turn-ins with zero backtracking.
- Queue Mogu'shan Palace (and Shado-Pan Monastery once it unlocks) while questing — take the queue pop wherever you are, the entrance teleport makes it free.
- The Yaungol assault and Temple of the White Tiger arcs finish the level.
What to skip
The Shado-Pan Monastery outdoor side content and the far western Isle of Reckoning-style detours. The zone is huge; the spine runs up its eastern half.
Levels 88-89: Townlong Steppes
Target: 2h 30m. The fastest zone in Pandaria per hour. Townlong is a war zone — the Shado-Pan front against the mantid — and its quests are almost all "kill things that are already trying to kill you" in high-density camps.
What to do
- Follow the Shado-Pan war-front chains west across the zone (Longying Outpost → Shado-Pan Garrison).
- The yaungol and mantid assault hubs chain into each other with minimal travel.
- Keep your dungeon queue running — Shado-Pan Monastery bonus XP lands well here.
What to skip
Nothing major — Townlong is lean by design. If a quest sends you to the far northwest corner solo, check it's on the spine before committing.
Levels 89-90: Dread Wastes
Target: 2h 30m. The Klaxxi chains at Klaxxi'vess carry you the entire level — a single faction hub that unlocks paragon after paragon, each with its own quest cluster radiating outward.
What to do
- Ride the Klaxxi spine: awaken paragons, clear their clusters, return for turn-ins.
- Don't skip the paragons — Klaxxi rep gates valuable 90 rewards, and you earn it passively by just doing the leveling chain.
- Soggy's Gamble (the dread-fishing crew in the southeast) is a fast, dense side hub if you need a final XP push.
💡 The moment 90 pops
Hearth → train Wisdom of the Four Winds (~2,500g) at any Pandaria flight trainer → fly straight to the Timeless Isle. Do not finish the quest you were on. Gearing starts now — see SoO Catch-Up below.
Dungeon Inserts
Pandaria's leveling dungeons, in unlock order: Temple of the Jade Serpent (85), Stormstout Brewery (85+), Mogu'shan Palace (87), Shado-Pan Monastery (87+). Gate of the Setting Sun and Siege of Niuzao Temple are level-90 dungeons — they're not part of the leveling route.
Levels 85-87: Story-Aligned Clears
- Temple of the Jade Serpent — the Jade Forest spine routes past it; quests inside
- Stormstout Brewery — the Valley spine literally ends at its door
- One clear each; re-runs lose to quest XP
Levels 87-90: Background Queue
- Mogu'shan Palace (87) and Shado-Pan Monastery (87+) while questing Kun-Lai and Townlong
- Queue as you quest — never stop moving for a dungeon
- Random dungeon bonus XP ≈ half a quest hub per run
Quest vs Dungeon vs Grinding: The Numbers
| Method | XP / Hour | Best For | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spine questing (this guide) | 550-650k | Everyone | Main-story chains massively out-pay side hubs |
| Questing + background dungeon queue | 580-680k | Tanks / healers with fast queues | Our benchmark method — queue never interrupts questing |
| Dungeon spam only | 400-480k | Premade 5-mans | Solid but strictly worse than the spine unless fully premade |
| Mob grinding | 250-350k | Nobody | Even with rested, Pandaria quest XP dwarfs it |
Class Speed Rankings (85-90)
| Tier | Classes | Est. 85-90 Time | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Fastest | Windwalker Monk, Death Knight, BM Hunter | 11.5-13h | Monk's Enlightenment buff (+50% XP) is the bracket's best tool |
| 🟢 Fast | Ret Paladin, Feral Druid, Warlock, Enhance Shaman | 13-14h | Strong sustain; druid travel form softens the no-flying rule |
| 🟡 Average | Mage, Rogue, Balance Druid | 14-15h | Good damage, more fragile on Townlong's dense packs |
| 🟠 Slower | Shadow Priest, Warrior | 15-16.5h | Downtime between packs; still very serviceable |
Advanced Speed Tips
Treat flight paths like a subway map
Grounded until 90 means Pandaria's FP network is your fast travel. Grab every flight point the spine passes, and check the map before any cross-zone trip — a two-hop flight beats five minutes of mountain pathing every time.
Spine first, triage everything else
When a hub offers five quests, the ones advancing the zone story are almost always the best XP per minute. If a side quest shares kill targets or area with a spine quest, take it; if it sends you somewhere new, skip it.
Never stop for the dungeon queue
Queue pops teleport you in and back. The players who lose time are the ones who fly to a meeting stone or idle in town waiting. Quest until the exact second the queue fires.
Monk alts: schedule around Enlightenment
The Peak of Serenity daily's +50% XP buff lasts two hours of playtime. Time your longest sessions to start right after claiming it, and the 85-90 bracket compresses dramatically.
Log out in Pandaria inns, not mid-field
Same rule as every bracket, bigger payoff here: Pandaria kill XP is the largest in Classic, so rested doubling is worth more absolute XP than anywhere else in the 1-90 climb.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does 85-90 take in MoP Classic?
13-14 hours played with a tight route, or closer to 11 hours with fully banked rested XP. Pandaria quest XP is enormous, but the bracket is grounded (no flying until 90) and the zones are level-gated, so route tightness matters more than in the 80-85 bracket.
Can I fly while leveling in Pandaria?
No. Pandaria flying requires level 90 — Wisdom of the Four Winds, roughly 2,500 gold from any Pandaria flight trainer. Train it the moment you ding: your first flight should be straight to the Timeless Isle for catch-up gear.
Should I quest or queue dungeons from 85-90?
Quest as your backbone, and queue for dungeons while questing rather than instead of it. The leveling dungeons — Temple of the Jade Serpent (85), Stormstout Brewery (85+), Mogu'shan Palace (87), Shado-Pan Monastery (87+) — are worth one clear each for their quests and the random-dungeon bonus, but repeat runs lose to Pandaria quest XP.
Which Pandaria zones can I skip?
Krasarang Wilds (dip in only if you're short on XP before Kun-Lai), the Veiled Stair, and most side hubs off each zone's main story spine. You can't skip whole zones outright — Pandaria gates each zone by level — but you only need roughly 60-70% of each zone before the next one opens.
What is the fastest class to level 85-90?
The classic speed trio — Death Knight, Ret Paladin, and BM Hunter — plus Windwalker Monk, which is exceptional in this bracket thanks to the Enlightenment XP buff (+50% XP from the Peak of Serenity daily). Monks are arguably the fastest 85-90 class in the game.
What should I do at level 90 to get Siege of Orgrimmar ready?
Train flying, fly to the Timeless Isle, and farm iLvl 496 armor tokens — a fresh 90 can fill most slots in one evening. Start the legendary cloak questline immediately, cap Lesser Charms for bonus rolls, and you'll meet the ~496 item level that Flex Siege of Orgrimmar groups expect within days.
Final Thoughts
85-90 is the last climb of MoP Classic, and the phase timing makes it the best one: ride each zone's story spine, skip the side hubs, keep a dungeon queue running from 87, and treat rested XP as sacred. Ding 90, buy flying, and the Timeless Isle turns your fresh character into a Siege of Orgrimmar raider inside a week.
